We're Inspired by. . . Alexander Girard

If you need a little
more whimsy in your life I bet some Alexander Girard-designed textiles will do
just the trick. We often turn to the work of the Mid-Century designer when we
need to get the creative juices flowing for custom wallpapers and finishes. It
seems obvious today, but Girard was one of the first designers to stress form
and not just function in textile design through the use of color and pattern.
As the head of the textile department at Herman Miller in the 50’s and 60’s, he
was responsible for enlivening the furniture of his colleagues George Nelson
and Charles and Ray Eames. Deeply influenced by his passion for folk art,
Girard’s designs show the hand of the artist and his masterful command and deep
understanding of color.

Fun EOA connection: Robin's parents took her to see the famous Girard-designed La Fonda Del Sol Restaurant when she was in fifth grade.

After the jump we have
put together a (decidedly not comprehensive) list of resources for Girard-designed
products. . .

Inspiration: White Birch Forests

Detail from "Birches" by the artist Amy Archer

Here at the EOA
office, we're up to our eyeballs in wood samples of every shape and color.
Lately, we prefer reclaimed versions from old barns and cabins out west. While
beautiful materials are the tools of our trade, we of course prefer to see wood
in its natural state, growing tall and strong in the forest. That's especially
true for white birch. Forests can be dark, dense places but the white bark,
graceful trunks, and small, perfectly leaf-shaped foliage of birches provide a sense of
lightness. The leaves, which flutter in the wind and turn yellow/orange in the fall,
are small enough to filter lots of light through to the forest floor where ferns and grasses thrive. White birch forests are prevalent in Northern Michigan,
where Robin grew up, and Maine, her favorite place to escape the city. This
might explain why she decided to recreate a white birch forest on her kitchen
wall in the form of an adhesive mural. Hey, if you can’t get to the forest, why
not bring the forest to you?

Speaking of that wall mural, we realize that the birch tree motif, which has been a major trend in shelter design over the last few years, may have almost reached a point of oversaturation. That said, we believe it to be an eternal classic that's having its moment in the sun and haven't quite tired of it. What do you think - has the birch theme gone the way of swallows and deer antlers and crossed into cliché territory? (First world problems, I know!)

Before she founded EOA, Robin
modeled for over a decade, starting off as Oscar de la Renta’s house model, then
off to Europe where she posed for photographers Helmut Newton, Olivieri
Toscani, Michel Comte and Norman Parkinson. While working with the likes of Armani, Ferré, Moschino, Mugler, and Versace, Robin learned to appreciate the architectural structure of garments. This
background has helped Robin build a roster of fashion-related clients,
designing the offices of New York Models and DNA Model Management and the homes
of Karolina Kurkova and Isabella Rossellini. Click through for more photos from her modeling days.
