New York, NY | 2,000 sq ft. | 2000
A studio apartment was annexed to a one-bedroom unit for a media consultant and graphic designer. Central to the approach was the owner's childhood desire to become an astronaut, articulated in images from his favorite films, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "2001". Stills from these films were given as reference points and helped to guide some of the material selections. The space is transformed by curtains sliding out from brushed steel containers. Light is allowed to slip through slots where walls have been pulled away. Screens, aluminum grilles and surfaces, silver vinyl flooring and trim, white storage units that float within the space create a place of rigorous order and contemplative refuge.
