The clients had purchased a small penthouse apartment adjacent to their larger residence on the roof of a pre-war multi-tenant co-op on New York's Upper West Side. The project entailed combining the two and navigating the complex system of existing building infrastructure. The space was designed to allow for a children's wing and a separate adult/public wing with the central kitchen uniting the two. The client enjoyed cooking for his family thus the kitchen occupies the heart of the apartment. Sycamore, bamboo, concrete, chalkboard and twine give a warm texture to the spaces while the hearth made from Detroit-based Pewabic tile provides a shimmering focal point.
